Little Shoe, the King and the Three coins

Little Shoe was poor, but she carried three plain coins: one to win all things, one to always be content, and one to keep trouble away.

The King had gold, armies, and a crown — yet none of these.

He won battles, but never peace.

He ate at feasts, but never felt full.

He ruled, but never felt safe.

When he saw Little Shoe laugh barefoot in the street, he felt the sting of incompletness. Her laugh carried true joy, more than all the kings of the earth. So one day he sent someone to stole her coins, and from then on his palace brimmed with triumph, plenty, and safety.

But unjustice never rests unpunished. One night Death came to him and said:

“Eat, or you shall not wake. Each morsel is the shadow of what you stole.”

The King swallowed seven bitter pieces — spoiled care, sleeplessness, bad fortune, hollow joy, empty victory, cold solitude, and sharp sorrow. At the last bite, the three coins tumbled from his mouth, blackened and useless.

The coin of victory returned marked with a mirror, showing the king his own fear and yearning. Its release taught him the weight of hope unclaimed.

The coin of contentment reappeared marked with wind-blown feather, reminding him of courage lost in the safety of his palace. It's release opened a heart long closed.

The coin of safety came marked with a note folded in a child's laughter, revealing love he had overlooked in the ordinary connections around him. It's release opened a heart long closed.

Death gave them back to Little Shoe. She found them changed — heavy, scarred, and sharp. So she released them into the world:

The coin of victory she buried in the soil, so crops might win against famine.

The coin of contentment she dropped into the rivers, so thirst might always be quenched.

The coin of safety she cast into the winds, so travelers might be spared from harm.

The King lay in his golden bed, rotting from within.

Little Shoe walked away light, with nothing but her name.

To envy another is to choke on shadows. What you steal will poison you; what you release will feed the world.
